Advanced Manners Menu!

Here at SJC, our Advanced Manners program is based on the Association of Professional Dog Trainer’s “Canine Life And Social Skills” program (C.L.A.S.S.).  This is a three tiered program of increasingly challenging degrees that your dog can earn by passing each level’s test.

Bachelor’s Degree

This is a 7 week long  class (week 1 humans only)!  Dogs will learn all the skills required to pass the BA level CLASS test.

Dogs Learn:

  • Wait at the door
  • Come when called
  • Loose Leash Walking
  • Greeting a friendly stranger
  • Leave it
  • Settle on a mat
  • Stay
  • Drop/give
  • Wait for the food bowl

Humans Learn:

  • The rules and requirements for the Canine Life And Social Skills program
  • How to elevate the already known skills to meet the testing criteria for the CLASS test

Prerequisite: Dogs must have completed the High School Manners class (do not need to have officially earned the CGC) or have instructor approval for completing and equivalent class or private training.  

Dogs should be comfortable in a group class setting with other dogs and people around–if you are unsure, please contact us and we will help you decide if group class is right for your dog.

 


Master’s Degree

This is a 7 week long  class (week 1 humans only)!  Dogs will learn all the skills required to pass the MA level CLASS test.

Dogs Learn:

  • Wait in the car until released
  • Loose leash walk past dogs outside
  • Wait at the door while a person walks past
  • Recall from a stranger offering a treat
  • Sit, down, stand
  • Allow body handling (ears, teeth, tail and feet)
  • Loose Leash walking and Leave It around full food bowls on the ground
  • Stay with distractions

Humans Learn:

  • The rules and requirements for the MA level CLASS test
  • How to elevate the already known skills to meet the testing criteria for the MA CLASS test

Prerequisite: Dogs must have completed the BA CLASS and passed the test.

PhD Degree

This is a 7 week long class (no dogs week 1).  Dogs will learn all the skills required to pass the PhD level CLASS test.

 

Dogs Learn:

  • Loose leash walk up to the door, sit and wait while owner opens it (while owner carries a box)
  • Loose leash walking through obstacles (while owner carries a box)
  • Back up away from owner or while in heel position
  • Stay while owner walks away to place box down
  • Come when called through a gauntlet of toys and food
  • Greet a friendly stranger and allow body handling
  • Offer attention after there is a knock at the door and a stranger enters
  • Settle on a mat while owner sits at a table with a ‘friend’ and eats a snack
  • Demonstrates an ability to respond to ‘sit’ no matter what their owner looks like (through a door, or while owner lays on the ground, or when owner is standing on a chair, etc)

Humans Learn:

  • The rules and requirements for the PhD level CLASS test
  • How to elevate known skills to the PhD level and teach the new skills

Prerequisite: Dogs must have completed the MA CLASS level and passed the test
