Puppy Einstein, EmmyLou starts her puppy class with a puzzle toy!

Puppy Pre-K!

This is a 5 week long socialization class (week 1 humans only)!  This is all about preparing your puppy to be a well adjusted adult dog by giving them good experiences with a wide variety of things they will experience in the world.

Puppies Learn:

  • Veterinary experiences are safe (getting on scales, being on tables, having nails trimmed, being examined)
  • Being handled by their owners is safe (ears, paws, tails, nail trims)
  • Having their collars grabbed isn’t a bad thing
  • Novel items aren’t scary (vacuums, inflatable decorations, umbrellas, wheelchairs, hula hoops, balloons, etc)
  • Novel noises aren’t scary (city sounds, fireworks, trains, thunder, baby crying)
  • Confidence on uneven and novel footing (normal substrates plus bubble wrap, bottles in a pool, tippy boards, etc)
  • People are awesome (even if those people are in costumes)
  • Puppy play interactions

Humans Learn:

  • How to help their puppy become confident and well-adjusted adult dogs
  • How to moderate puppy play (what is healthy play and what is unhealthy and how to interrupt)
  • How to help their puppy feel less nervous about something that scared them
  • All about puppy body language
  • Creative enrichment activities to help keep their puppies out of their hair

This class is appropriate for dogs 9 weeks to 14 weeks old and can be taken in conjunction with Puppy K.  We require 1 round of vaccines (distemper/parvo)  at least 1 week prior to the start of class and puppies must follow their veterinarian’s suggested vaccine schedule throughout class (typically a booster every 2 – 6 weeks depending on the schedule).

Puppy Kindergarten

This is a 7 week long socialization and training class (week 1 humans only)!  Puppies will have some socialization experiences every week, focusing on body handling, puppy play, and novel stimuli but the bulk of this class is all about teaching humans how to set their puppy up to have good manners!

Puppies Learn:

  • Offering attention and focus
  • Offering sits
  • Offering downs
  • Crate manners
  • Greeting people nicely (4 paws on the floor)
  • Impulse control
  • Settle on a mat
  • Foundation Leash walking

Humans Learn:

  • Clicker training mechanics (or “yes” instead of a clicker)
  • All about puppy things like socialization, house training, puppy nipping, chewing, crating, and more
  • Management techniques to implement at home to prevent unwanted puppy behavior
  • Puppy body language

This class is appropriate for dogs 9 weeks to 16 weeks old and can be taken in conjunction with puppy pre-k for eligible puppies.  We require 1 round of vaccines (distemper/parvo)  at least 1 week prior to the start of class and puppies must follow their veterinarian’s suggested vaccine schedule throughout class (typically a booster every 2 – 6 weeks depending on the schedule).  Proof of rabies vaccine must be shown for puppies by 16 weeks of age.

Puppy Einsteins!

This is a 7 week long puppy foundation class for the distinguished puppy parent who wants to do more activities or sports with their dog as an adult or who finds joy in creative training (week 1 humans only).  So you want to play agility, nosework, rally-o, flyball, freestyle dancing, canine frisbee (aka disc dog), trick dog titles, or more?  This is a great place to start with your puppy!  Although there will likely be a small amount of puppy play (depending on the ages of the pups), it is mostly about teaching the foundation skills you will benefit from when your puppy is all grown up and you want to do the fun stuff!

Puppies Learn:

  • How to learn through clicker training (shaping, capturing, luring behaviors)
  • Hind end awareness (for precision heeling, position changes, jumping foundations, 2 on 2 off skill, and more)
  • Flatwork for agility (sticky handling, sending around cones, running through jump uprights)
  • Confidence on unstable footing (tippy boards, flat boards, pause table on the ground, tunnels)
  • Targeting (hand targets and sending to targets)
  • Using toys as rewards (rules of tug or toys)
  • Mat work (going to a mat, laying on a mat, settling on a mat)
  • Body awareness tricks like spin, roll over, play bows, or back up
  • Basic skills like sit, down, and greeting people appropriately

Humans Learn:

  • Stellar clicker training mechanics (or “yes” instead of the click)
  • How to effectively teach their dog through shaping and capturing techniques
  • How to use toys and play as rewards for toy and play motivated dogs
  • How to set their dog up for success with each skill (raising criteria when appropriate)
  • How to keep things safe for their aspiring athlete

This class is appropriate for dogs 9 weeks to 6 months old and can be taken in conjunction with our other puppy classes.
